FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Everything you need to know about Patron of the Noise. We aim to be as transparent as possible hence these faqs. If there’s anything else you want to know please get in touch.

GENERAL QUESTIONS

GREAT IDEA, I’D LIKE TO HELP OUT BANDS TOO, CAN I CONTRIBUTE TO THE FUND?

Absolutely! If you’d like to put some money – any money – into the fund, please email us at patronofthenoise@gmail.com or pay money directly into the Patron of the Noise paypal account at patronofthenoise@gmail.com. If you would like to offer suggestions as to bands Patron of the Noise should consider supporting, please do not hesitate to make those suggestions when contributing. Patron of the Noise may also seek grant funding from philanthropic or government grants. Patron of the Noise Inc has not applied for deductible gift recipient statues with the tax office, so there are no tax advantages to contributing.

I’M IN A BAND. HOW DO I APPLY TO BE ASSISTED BY THE FUND?

Please email us a link to your music at patronofthenoise@gmail.com, but we make no promises to listen to unsolicited material. We can only support Australian artists.

HOW OFTEN WILL GRANTS BE MADE?

We want to keep a float to cover legal and compliance expenses, so there will be two initial offers. It will take a while for things to move forward and we expect the fund will be replenished fairly slowly. Whenever the balance in the fund hits $2500, Patron of the Noise will make a new offer.

WHAT ARE THE CRITERIA FOR SELECTION?

There are no formal criteria other than the band must be based in Australia.
We like guitars – rock, punk, metal and pop, so those genres will most likely to be supported. It’s not necessary for Patron of the Noise to see a business plan or a marketing plan. We want to support music getting out that wouldn’t otherwise. We would hope that bands supported by Patron of the Noise would expect to sell enough to recompense the fund so the next band can be helped.

All decisions are final. If Patron of the Noise expresses an interest in your band, let us know how many copies of what you would like to press, and a quote.

WILL THERE BE A LEGAL AGREEMENT?

We will exchange emails with expectations, which may be seen to form a common law contract.

That agreement will include Patron of the Noise providing a grant to pay for production of the record, and an undertaking by the band to repay half of the income generated from the sale of those records back into the fund operated by Patron of the Noise.

WHAT ATTRIBUTION WOULD YOU WANT?

We would like every record to include the phrase “Thanks to Patron of the Noise” and our logo and website.

If you have a website or bandcamp site that you use to sell your records I’d like “Supported by Patron of the Noise” and a link on there somewhere.

ARE YOU SUPPORTING SINGLES, EPS, ALBUMS, 33RPM, 45 RPM, CDS?

The intention is to press music on vinyl. If you have other ideas, for example CDs or other merchandise don’t hesitate to ask.

DO YOU EXPECT FREE COPIES?

No, but the members of Patron of the Noise would like to have the opportunity to buy a copy.

WHO WE ARE

WHO ARE YOU?

The idea for Patron of the Noise came from Ben Harris, a music fan from Melbourne. His wife, Sharon De La Rue, was very supportive and let Patron of the Noise take $5000 out of the mortgage account to start off the fund. To make sure the legalities are all sound, we have invited people we know to make up the numbers to set up an incorporated association. The other directors are Bridie Allanadale and Michael Moore.

HOW TRANSPARENT ARE YOU?

That will include any legal and compliance costs, transaction costs, which bands have been supported (if any during the period), which bands have paid money into the fund (if any during the period), and the current balance of the fund. Patron of the Noise will also comply with the legal reporting requirements to government regulators, including Consumer Affairs Victoria, the Australian Charities and Not for profit Commission, and the Australian Tax Office.
